United States gymnast Jade Carey from Phoenix wants badly to win while in Paris, but her body is not cooperating with her.
The 24-year-old stated she has been fighting an undisclosed illness in recent days. She blamed the unfortunate bug for her uncharacteristically poor performance on floor exercise in Sunday’s gymnastics qualifying round at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Carey is the reigning Olympic champion on the floor, but she ended up falling during her qualifying routine and will not have the chance to repeat it.
“I haven’t been feeling the best the past few days, but I gave it everything I had today,” Carey wrote on X after telling Olympics.com that she had not been able to eat and lacked energy. “Thank you for all the support I have received. I’m so grateful.”
Jade Carey ended the floor routine with a score of 10.633.
Carey’s father, who is also her coach, missed podium training because he is also dealing with an illness, USA Gymnastics announced via X, formerly Twitter.
Shortly after falling, Carey redeemed herself when she went on to nail her vault routine in a stunning reversal from her previous Olympic appearance.
Carey saw a vault score of 14.433.
You could visibly see the relief on her mother’s face, Danielle Mitchell-Greenberg, who burst into tears in the stands.
Jade Carey’s performance helped Team USA secure its spot in the women’s gymnastics team all-around finals.

The United States squad of Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Carey and Hezly Rivera produced the high total score of 172.296 at the subdivision two qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday.
Jade Carey has represented the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics as an individual and the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics as a member of the women’s team.
The Oregon State product is on her second trip to the Summer Games after she competed for Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
With a total of eight Olympic and World Championship medals, Carey is the sixth most decorated U.S. female gymnast of all time, per Wikipedia.com.
